MIBF Presents a Rights Catalogue of Contemporary Russian Literature in English and Chinese
For the 39th Moscow International Book Fair (MIBF), the MIBF Directorate, in cooperation with Russian publishers, prepared a rights catalogue of contemporary Russian literature. Published in two versions — English and Chinese — the catalogue is intended for international publishers, literary agents, and other professionals in the global publishing industry.
The catalogue was developed as part of the Directorate’s systematic efforts to expand international cooperation and promote Russian literature abroad. Working together with Russian publishers, the Directorate selected works by contemporary Russian authors whose rights are available for acquisition by international partners.
The catalogue was used as part of the professional programme of the 39th MIBF and during business negotiations between Russian publishers and their international counterparts. Its purpose is not only to introduce individual books and authors, but also to make contemporary Russian literature more accessible to the international publishing community and to create new opportunities for rights acquisition, translation, and publication of Russian works in other countries.
The Chinese-language edition was of particular importance in 2026. The People’s Republic of China was the Guest of Honour at the 39th MIBF, while the development of Russian-Chinese cooperation in publishing, literary translation, and professional exchange was one of the key areas of the Fair’s international programme.
“It is important to us that the Moscow International Book Fair serves not only as a meeting place for the professional community, but also as a platform where concrete projects and agreements can emerge. International promotion of literature requires consistent, long-term work: introducing contemporary Russian authors to international partners, creating effective professional tools for negotiations, and helping publishers connect with one another. The rights catalogue is one such tool. We expect it to continue working well beyond the Fair itself, providing a foundation for new translations, publications, and partnerships,” said Elena Grebeneva, Director General of the Directorate of International Book Exhibitions and Fairs.
As part of the 39th MIBF, the Russian Book Union, the Moscow Agency of Creative Industries, and the Directorate of International Book Exhibitions and Fairs organised an extensive programme of professional business meetings. A total of 270 meetings were held between Russian and international publishing professionals. The meetings resulted in 27 preliminary agreements related to rights transactions, as well as a number of requests for materials for further review, translation, and potential publication of Russian works.
The Directorate will continue its work to strengthen international professional ties and promote contemporary Russian literature throughout the year. These efforts will also form an important part of preparations for the 40th anniversary edition of the Moscow International Book Fair in 2027.
